When we go to transform our lives, a bit of resistance is normal and natural. The brain likes habits. Habits are easy. Habits are energy efficient. The habits that we have developed over the course of our lives have kept us alive; and, the unknown is unknown and unknowable.
It’s normal to have a bit of difficulty when creating changes in the mind.
It’s important that we remember that resistance does NOT mean that the process isn’t working. It doesn’t mean that we aren’t transforming. It doesn’t mean that we’re not learning and growing as a person.
Resistance often feels greater and more powerful than it truly is. Don’t make the mistake of believing in this feeling.
Change is uncomfortable by nature. To choose to change is to step outside of your comfort zone; and, by stepping outside, eventually expand it.
Change is stretching and stretching is uncomfortable. The key to stretching is to let yourself become comfortable with the discomfort and to find a rate of change that is not too much for you. Allow the discomfort and change happens. Invite the discomfort, welcome it. It lets you know that change is happening.
Recognize that resistance coming up is a very good sign indeed. It means the process is working. It means that you are in the process of reaching your goals. It means that you are in the process of transformation.
Don’t believe the lie that resistance, or even falling back into old patterns for a little while, means that the process of change isn’t working. Sometimes when transforming we take two steps forward and one step back. That one step back is nothing to be afraid of. Don’t believe that one step back is going back to square one, it is not.
Change is a process. It is dynamic motion. It is not always as fast and as smooth as we would like; but, it is possible. It is doable for you. It is doable for anyone who is willing to commit themselves.
