Something is Happening

A lot of people get frustrated with meditation and give up on it.  Invariably, the reason they give is that they tried it and nothing happened.

I know it’s a bold claim; but, I can say with absolute certainty that you are feeling things now.  What are you feeling?  It’s not nothing, what is it?  What sensations grab your attention.  If you don’t notice anything, look harder!  Pay attention.  Don’t half-ass this and you will get a result.  Focus on your body.  You will notice something; but, what?  That I can’t know.

How can nothing happen?

It can’t.  Something can’t not happen.  You are always experiencing something.  You aren’t experiencing nothing now.  You’re reading for one; but, what else are you noticing?  What are you hearing now?  What are you seeing?  What are you smelling?  What are you feeling?

Stuff, all kinds of stuff, is happening now.  Observe it.  Notice it.  Pay attention to it.

When someone says, “Nothing is happening.” what it really means is that they aren’t able to perceive anything strange or unusual happening.  That’s fine!  Forget about strange and unusual and just let yourself notice what’s happening now without judgment.

One of the best techniques to use is to simply narrate your ongoing experience, regardless of what it is.  Do not judge what comes up.  Notice it and when you notice it, talk about it. By talking about it you reinforce it and say, “Yup.  I’m noticing that alright.”

Perhaps the best place to start meditation and self-hypnosis training is just to notice things and reinforce them with attention.  If you really want to magnify a sensation, focus on it, talk about it.  It will almost always grow stronger and clearer.  But, the first step is simply acknowledging it.

You can tune in to your body.  Is some part of you feeling more relaxed?  Talk about it.  That’s something happening, something you hadn’t noticed before.  Do you feel a tingling somewhere?  How about heaviness?  What is there in your body that you’re feeling now.

The more you notice sensations and talk about them, the more you will find to notice.  It’s inevitable.  Nothing can’t happen, only something.  But, what?

You can’t mess this up.  You can’t do it wrong.  You’ve been sensing things all your life.  You’ve been seeing, hearing and feeling things for years.  So, do more of what you’ve been doing all along; just, with more attentiveness, more focus, more mindfulness and greater awareness.

How about hearing?  What sounds can you become aware of that you weren’t aware of before?  They were there, in the background, filtered out as unimportant.  Notice them.  That’s all it takes to bypass the filter, noticing.  And, when you notice, talk about it to reinforce that something worth paying attention to is happening.

What do you see? If your eyes are open, you’re seeing something.  What is it?  If your eyes are closed, you’re seeing something (if only blackness.)  If you want to see something more than the blackness, start with where you’re at.  Start with the blackness.  Does it have a texture?  Is it solid black or do you notice some red filtering through your eyelids?  Does it seem to be flickering?  Is it flowing, moving?  Describe, describe, describe and the more that you describe, the more details you will see.

Describing your ongoing experience like this will inevitably, over time, lead to hypnogogic imagery and a transition to a wake-induced lucid dream state; but, it comes in time.  It probably won’t happen the first time or the second or third.  It comes from accepting where you’re at and immersing yourself in the process.  The process will take you forward.  It can’t not take you forward if you do it; but, you can stop at any time.  You can block your progress, if you so choose, by rejecting what is there because it’s not yet what you wanted.  And, you can unblock yourself just as easily by asking yourself, “What is happening now?”

What do you smell? What smells are there that you weren’t perceiving before because they weren’t important enough to notice?

Immerse yourself in your senses and you will find that they become magnified.  This is all about seeing beyond what your seeing.  Perceiving the things that are normally filtered out as unimportant.  There are always countless things going on.  Nothing can’t happen and all that is necessary is choosing to look for what is there that you were ignoring.
