Expressions of Gratitude

One of the best ways to get more of something is to express gratitude for it.  I don’t know that I believe that there is some metaphysical process that makes this so; but, perfectly ordinary cause and effect definitely does.

If you notice when you’re feeling happy and you smile and let yourself appreciate the moment, it tunes the mind into those feelings of happiness and increases them.  It trains the mind to seek out those feelings and bring them into conscious awareness.  The more you express gratitude for your joy, your pleasure, your happiness and your peace, the more of those things you will find yourself experiencing because of the effects that gratitude has on the learning process.

If you take the time to stop and appreciate beauty in the world, a similar thing happens within the mind.  You train your mind to look for the beauty.  By putting conscious attention on beauty and really letting yourself appreciate it, you train your subconscious to do so habitually.  The more you appreciate beauty, the more beauty you will see.  There’s not necessarily any more beauty in the world; but, by training the mind to habitually seek out the beautiful, the world you see becomes more beautiful.

This does have at least some influence on external reality.  You can think of gratitude as a gift that you give to someone.  If they have done something kind for you and you express sincere gratitude and appreciation, it makes them feel good for what they have done.  This makes them that much more likely to do kind things for you in the future.  It does not control them; but, it does influence their ongoing decision making process by making them feel good.  Imagine that, people want to do more of things that make them feel good!  What a bizarre concept!

The gift of gratitude is a gift that you give to others and to yourself at the same time.  It feels good in the moment and it is an investment in a brighter future.

It is good to be mindful of the fact that our emotions are not just powerful, they are power.  To express love and joy and gratitude is to increase the power of these emotions and gain the benefits that come with them.  They are energy that you get to choose how to direct.  It’s your mental and emotional energy.  It’s your mind.  What do you want to do with it?  How do you choose to direct your power?  What benefits do you want?  What gifts and treasures are out there in the world that you would like to be a part of your life?  Seek and you will find, love and you will find more.  We are drawn to what we love, let yourself be drawn towards your goals.  Let yourself be attracted by the gifts that life has to offer.
